The World Crisis: An Abridgment of the Classic 4-Volume History of World War I
Published in Hardcover by Scribner (September, 1992)
Author: Winston S. Churchill
Average review score:

The Bloodiest Century's Opening Act
This magnificent abridgement, published eight years before Hitler invaded Poland, clearly illustrates the fatal miscalculations with which the European nations entered and waged The Great War of 1914-18, and presages the dreadful and continuing consequences of having pursed them to the end. The final pages are as moving a condemnation of war as is found in English, made all the more poignant by our foreknowledge of Churchill's subsequent achievements. If you want to know how our world got to be the way it is today, start with this book.

One of the finest works of history ever written.
Churchill's memoirs of World War 1 is one of the finest works of history ever written and is probably among the three or four best works on WW1(together with Martin Gilbert's recent History of the First World War).It is also a masterpiece of Engish literature, demonstrating a prose style that later won Churchill the Nobel Prize. While the book necessarily reflects Churchill's own experiences in the war,it is reasonably unbiased and balanced, although he certainly presents his own case forcefully and convincingly. The only limitation of the book is that it was written only afew years after the end of the war so it did not have access to all the government arhives released later.Despite this,I believe that Churhill's conclusions have stood up well even in the light of subsequently released archive material. However, one might consider reading the book together with a "modern" history--such as Martin Gilbert's--for a more complete perspective.

A great practice book of basic French grammar and vocabulary
If you are learning from Allez, viens Textbook Level 1, this is a must buy workbook!! It is set up in an easy-to-read fashion, and offers reinforcement to the Grammar and Vocabulary that is taught in Allez, viens Level 1 Textbook. The exercises are clear and to the point and really get you to think about what you are learning. I am teaching myself French from the Allez, Viens series, and this book really helps me remember what I learned from the Allez, viens textbook!! Even if you are learning French from another source or just simply need review, this book offers a great opportunity for review and improvement!! Each topic is explained in the Note de Grammaire sections and the Vocabulaire sections that are throughout the book. It is pleasing to look at, and gives me a positive attitude that I am successfully going to learn some aspect of the French language each time I open it!! I HIGHLY SUGGEST this book, along with the textbook and the PRACTICE AND ACTIVITY BOOK, which is availabe and is part of the series. Each book will help you master basic French, and will send you on with much ease to Level 2! Buy this book. It is a great help at a great price. You are doing yourself and your ability to speak French a great favor in buying this book!

Great Gift Idea
The recipes include foods that the whole family will enjoy - great for those trying to lower their cholestrol who also have kids. I gave it as a gift to a friend who just had a heart attack at age 40 (better than flowers, and I certainly wouldn't give chocolates) and he enjoyed the recipies so much I'm buying one for myself.

Another Part Of The House
I first read this book more than 20 years ago and was completely mesmerized by its style and story. I still have my well worn copy, which I have reread several times over the years. There has never been a book I have read that has transported me so completely and touched me so deeply as this. From the well written description of small town Texas life in the early part of the 1900's, to the heartfelt truths about family and love, this book is, in my estimation, worthy to be called an American Classic.

Baron Bagge Count Luna (Eridanos Press Library, No 11)
Published in Paperback by Marsilio Pub (January, 1989)
Authors: Alexander Lernet-Holenia, Alexander Lernet Holenia, Hugo Schmidt, and Richard Winston
Average review score:

Unquestionably One of the Finest 20th Century Writers
The world's great writers have always been capable of establishing an unforgettable mood in their works, of combining imagery and plot to create pieces of enduring value. This is no less true of Alexander Lernet-Holenia. More than any other writer of the last century, Lernet-Holenia possessed that indefinable quality that makes his writing an experience both of mind and spirit, the ability to know the human being for what he really is and to provide this knowledge in a literary form that is both enoyable to read and profoundly enlightening to encounter. Chekhov, Faulkner, Joyce, Mann, and Proust are some of the geniuses who gave us life in all its magnificent eloquence and sordidness, who set down in words that superb juxtaposition of beauty and hideousness that constitutes the world we live in and the resulting struggle that humans are constantly engaged with as they are buffeted by these incessant forces. In two novellas, Lernet-Holenia reveals to us the kind of talent that truly makes him the kind of writer who will be read for as long as civilized men exist. There is no reason to repeat what the reviewer above has written about the plots of these two superb stories, as this has been admirably accomplished. But, in closing, I do urge any readers of this review to get a copy of this astonishing book. If you know the difference between good and great, you will be forever thankful you were introduced to Alexander Lernet-Holenia.

The Biology of the Honey Bee
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (April, 1991)
Author: Mark L. Winston
Average review score:

A sense of wonder
I picked up this book in a store and bought it out of idle curiousity, as I am neither an entomologist, biologist or beekeeper. Its content amazed me and spurred me to return to reading general interest science books, an area I had largely shunned after leaving university.

Apart from the fascinating content, the book wins because of the author's superb style. While sacrificing nothing in the way of content (at least to this nonspecialist's eye) he never indulged in technical jargon, making the book accessible to any interested person.

Blackbird
Published in Paperback by August Pr (08 November, 2000)
Author: Betty Winston Baye
Average review score:

Through the Looking Glass
This is a book that forces you to look beyond the surface at your real self, thoughts, prejudices and preconceptions. It confronts and challenges your assumptions as in the essays about homophobia or black on black crime. It also reminds us that in many ways, African Americans, have surrendered our power and our history that could solve some of our current day dilemmas, when all we need to do is embrace our history and use it as a stepping stone to a more positive future. It's timely and universal and what happens is Louisville is true for America everywhere. It's not only a good read all at once, but like a favorite dish, it can be savored and enjoyed again and again.

Good for advanced students and PR professionals, too
The wide range of PR cases, from corporate and non-profit situations and problems clearly involves critical thinking. It offers no pat answers, just helps the reader learn how to think through real crises and problems.
